Four Fire Chiefs Holding Award

Fire Chief Receives Innovator of the Year Award

On June 15, 2022, Captain Michael Alfano received the Fire Chiefs Association of Broward County Mike Murphy Innovator of the Year Award for 2022 during the Fire Chiefs Association of Broward County's First There First Care conference.

Capt. Alfano received the award for developing a sensory kit that Davie Fire Rescue will use for distracting and calming anxious patients under care, especially those with autism. Alfano is also developing a training program to increase firefighters' and paramedics' awareness of small changes that can provide care to those with autism to reduce stress. The model he is developing, along with Battalion Chief Romney Behnam, has been recognized by Broward County, where the department is expected to receive grant funding to make this program county-wide. During the conference, Florida State representatives also discussed with Fire Chief Downey about using this program throughout Florida. "We are incredibly proud of Capt. Alfano for his innovation and developing a program that will lead to the best care possible being provided to our patients," said Chief Julie Downey.

Please join us in congratulating Capt. Alfano for his award and achievement!
